I decided to go to a quiet place, far from man-made noise with rather an open field view so that I can have a better chance for good DX. An ex-airfield area in Hatfield has plenty of space for such a project.
Here are the coordinates of the place when I set up: 51.773885,-0254784. And below is the map view of the location. This point is about 2 km from our flat and is about 50 m from the boundary of the industrial park in Hatfield. There are some trees nearby to hang the wire.
I took with me DEGEN DE1103 portable receiver and 20 meters of speaker wire that I attach to the built-in-whip antenna. I also packed spare battery pack and a camera for recording.
I did have the Internet connection on my mobile, but I was writing down everything on a paper. It would take me to long to check the Internet for a given frequency so I decided to do it later. It was a good idea because the bands were packed with signals, as I found out later.
I decided to thrown the wire over the tree, so the wire was heading South West. Below are some photos how I set up the wire and how the area looks.
It takes me about 15 minutes before I set up everything and start listening. I eventually get tunning and I was amazed by a number of signals that I can hear. So many new languages were heard!
The most interesting is Pashto, Farsi and Amharic. Farsi is speaking in Iran and Pashto in Afganistan. Many new signals were received too. The most interesting is 6110 Radio Fana from Addis Ababa in Ethiopia and 6065 Voice of Hope Africa from Lusaka in Zambia. It's an amazing place for DX and I will certainly be going back for listening in that place.
